Riva actually begins when you leave the highway between Milan and Venice and continue along the western shore, the Gardesana Occidentale. The latter is a masterpiece of road construction, about 100 years old. On one side are the many galleries opening onto Lake Garda, on the other steep walls and picturesque lemon plantations in the villages. Riva is
located at the upper end of the lake, ideally situated and dominating the view. Once there, the first stop is the sailing club, the Fraglia Vela. The atmosphere at the crane is already great, with a warm welcome and professional launching, everyone helping everyone else.

The next day, the two-day training session with Mark Schuurman begins. His training places a lot of emphasis on boat trim. In the afternoon, we went out on the water to sail and trim. The wind was force 4 on the Beaufort scale, which increased slightly each day. As always, the lake was very busy with everything you could sit or stand on.

The three-day Springtime Regatta was won by the Dutch team led by Maarten Jamin, ahead of Gert Roukema’s team, also from Holland. The Swiss team Bazynga, with Dutch skipper Reinier de Kler, took an excellent third place.

Special mention must also go to the German youth team with skipper Charlotte Töpfer, who finished 10th on Lake Garda being first time on Lake Garda.

The Ynglings and their crews performed well with great enthusiasm. Not only I, but also many others were tired after five days of sailing, but very satisfied.

Eva Baumgartner, SUI 472

Norwegian Nationals held, 21st and 22nd June 2025 at Open Wolrds 2026 arena Askøy

17 boats gathered for the 2025 Norwegian Yngling Championship. The scene was set to the Open Worlds 2026 area at Askøy.

It was great to see two teams from eastern Norway make the trip to Askøy and Bergen this weekend! The two teams who did take the trip did not leave empty handed, leaving nothing but 3rd and downwards for the locals.
After 6 effective and super races on Saturday, NOR 414 Tingeling had a solid day and bagged four spikes and two third. NOR 414 sailed by Yngling Worlds 1990 World Champion and Soling 2000 Sydney bronze medallist Espen Stokkeland crewed by his wife, Yngling sailor from Beijing 2008 and their daughter.
Followed up with two spikes and fourth on Sunday for a solid overall gold. NOR 413 did very well with only 2 sailors, slided good both upwind and downwind in the 3-5m/s northwestern winds Saturday, always in top three. Even so on the first race Sunday which saw a shower arrive at a windstill fjord and dropped gusts around 10m/s on the sailors, like from opening a sac and pouring it out all at once. The rest of the Sunday saw choppy conditions with a bit varying pressure and typically 3-7m/s…ish.
Winner of the previous Norwegian Championship at Askøy in 2023, NOR 261 sailed home the bronze medal they held after the six races Saturday. NOR 405 was back with their 2023 crew but had to settle for fourth at this occasion. Thereafter followed NOR 217 in a beautifully refurbished boat, which we will see at Askøy 2026. NOR 411 secured 6th while Melges sailors debuted in Yngling with NOR 421 with a seventh overall.
Most unlucky team was NOR344 who lost their rig due to some Shroud issues, thankfully without any injuries.

The rest of the teams in the complete result list as follows:

Mark Schuurman, who has been successfully running training courses for the Yngling class for many years, is offering the following program for Riva:

On the two days before the regatta (June 17 and 18), training according to the wishes and requirements of the participants.

During the regatta (June 19-21), support for implementing what has been learned; tactical race analysis – including with the help of drone recordings.

The schedule for the two training days naturally depends on the prevailing weather system. On the first day, we meet at 10:00 am at the harbor to check the boats and launch them. After that, we will determine training objectives, obtain a corresponding briefing and then train for the rest of the day – depending on the wind conditions. The day will conclude with a debriefing.

The cost for two days training and three days coaching is €300 per boat. Youth boats pay half (€150). Please register via Doodle.

Mark is an excellent instructor – we can learn a lot.
